A study proposal to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions from coastal thermal power plant by using a multistage flash distillation unit followed by alkaline water electrolysis unit
سنة النشر: 2025
The study shows an innovative approach to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coastal thermal power plants by using a multistage flash distillation (MSF) unit followed by an alkaline water electrolysis unit. The study methodology showed that, different physicochemical analysis of the collected seawater samples were done, using inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry, with the using of different corrosion indexes and DEEP Version 1.5 codes. The study results revealed a significant increase in the calculated corrosion and scale formation index values across all four outlet cooling sites studied, where the lowest significant degree of corrosion and scale formation, was observed at the site(2) which far 150 m from the outlet cooling water channel of the thermal power plant. The study results showed that the chemical and economic outcomes resulting from the use of both the DEEP code and various corrosion and scale saturation indexes, were highly supportive tools for utilizing the MSF desalination unit at the outlet sampling site (2) than the use of the reverse osmosis desalination unit. The study recommends the using of alkaline water electrolysis in this proposed study, as it will give long service life, (designed for 20–30 years) to be used for the selected cooling water site (2). The study recommends mass production of hydrogen, with high stability, and with capacity 1000 Nm3/h, with ≤1.6 Mpa H2 pressure, as it will produce ≥99.999 % H2 purity. The study concluded the using of ∼100,000 m3/day ultrapure treated cooling water will lead to generate ∼11 tone hydrogen/day, which could be directly used to interact with the captured CO2 emissions, from the stack of the studied steam power plant.
